Why Outdoor Education?
Every visit, whether it is a 'one off' or a series of visits provides
a unique opportunity for students to respond to challenges in a
variety of conditions and, for example, experience and develop an
understanding of:
· The principles of safety in the outdoors and risk management.
· The techniques and skills specific to an outdoor adventurous
activity.
· Relating to others - peers, teachers and instructors.
· Working/ playing in a variety of roles including sharing,
working as a team member, being led and leading others. |

Outdoor education directly contributes to three
of the five outcomes of the "Every Child Matters" agenda
and indirectly to the other two. It is seen as a key element in
a rounded education and Ofsted look for a balanced curriculum
that includes education outside of the classroom. Central Government
also identifies the importance of outdoor learning and is pushing
forward best practice with its "Manifesto for Out of Classroom
Learning" which is due to be published later in 2006.
